The Island

Nestled just 30 miles north of Tahiti, the private atoll of Tetiaroa is a delicate paradise with a rich history and strong spirit. With its white sand beaches, lush wildlife, and sparkling, pristine lagoon, Tetiaroa is an exclusive retreat fit for royalty. In fact, Tetiaroa once served as a prized retreat for Tahitian royalty, including former Tahitian chiefs and kings.

Acquired by Marlon Brando in 1966, Tetiaroa served as a secluded hideaway from his life in the spotlight. The atoll remained a pristine South Pacific paradise—and Brando sought to keep it that way. His lifelong goal was to maintain the atoll in its purest condition and allow others to enjoy it. He envisioned a sustainable, ecological habitat, a dream realized just ten after his death. The Brando Resort opened in 2014 as one of the most luxurious, eco-friendly resorts on the planet. It is, and will remain, the exclusive lodging option on the private atoll of Tetiaroa.

Geography

Tetiaroa is part of the Society Islands in French Polynesia and is considered an extension of the Arue commune. Fittingly, the island name is a Polynesian word meaning “stands apart” or “at a distance.” The inner lagoon, which is only 3 miles wide, is completely enclosed and protected by 13 surrounding coral islets.

The private atoll is a natural sanctuary for birds and marine life. The bountiful coral reef encircling Tetiaroa is a magnificent oasis to at least 167 fish species from neon parrotfish to spotted eagle rays. Blacktip sharks and dolphins can often be seen swimming and playing around the reef.

Bird-watchers will delight in the flurry of exotic birds, majestically soaring above the island. A nearby motu called Tahuna Iti, or ‘bird island’ also serves as a natural sanctuary for thousands of commuter birds seeking refuge from predators. People are not permitted to approach the motu, but may view its avian inhabitants from a short distance, in the lagoon.
