Annual Heiva Festival Taking Place in Tahiti

The annual Heiva I Tahiti, festival, a traditional Polynesian song and dance contest began today in the heart of Papeete. The festival includes a contest among traditional Polynesian dance groups from around the Tahitian islands. The nights of competition at Place To’ata will also involve individuals competing for the prestigious titles of best male and female dancers.The Heiva dancing and singing contest will end with the traditional awards ceremony. The winning groups, announced during the awards ceremony, will then return to Place To’ata for a final performance.

 

The festival also features a variety of sport competitions including fruit carrying races, javelin throwing, stone lifting, and outrigger canoe races.

The festival is scheduled to take place until July 31st.
